When Is Engraving Done?

Engraving must be completed before the blade is quenched. Once hardened, the steel becomes too rigid for engraving. This timing makes engraving a high-risk, high-reward process—if the blade fails during quenching, the sword and its intricate engravings are both lost. As a result, engraved swords hold greater value due to the increased craftsmanship and risk involved.

Who Does the Engraving?

Engraving can be performed by the swordsmith or by a specialist engraver. When the swordsmith personally engraves the blade, the work is called chōtō-saku, showcasing the smith’s comprehensive artistry and technical mastery.

Styles and Motifs of Sword Engraving

Engravings typically blend both relief (yang) and intaglio (yin) techniques. Common motifs include Sanskrit characters, dragons, swords, Buddhist deities like Fudō Myō-ō, and nature symbols such as plum blossoms and bamboo.
